Not to the same extent, maybe, but I was under the impression that it does occur. I'm not willing to go check right now due to memetic hazard, but doesn't TV Tropes have a page full of real life examples?

Nope. No Real Life entry for that trope exists.

It appears like it used to, as it is referenced in the text, and can be found on a fork of tvtropes here.

My favorite example from that page is Paul Erdős, who spent his life couch-surfing from one mathematical collaborator to the next.
