For me, this maps rather nicely onto my intuitive prejudices as to how much I should care about which creatures.

Do you care more about mice than about dogs?

I care more about dogs; after all we bred them hard-coded to love us. But in my personal intuitions of care, mice and dogs are certainly closer to each other than to chimps or birds.

Mice are more closely related to chimps and us than to dogs.

Sure.

I didn't mean to say that I care about animals exactly as much as I'm related to them. There are many exceptions. (Yay tardigrades!) I'm just saying the correlation seems good enough to be worth noticing.
