What does 'moral progress' mean? I could speak of 'scientific progress' and refer to the tendency of scientific change to produce models that are increasingly specific and accurate. Even if they're not ultimately correct, they're useful - predictive utility has increased.

What desirable condition is increased by free speech, democracy, and the like?
