Hopefully Anonymous: if you'd like a mystery like that, I can recommend _The Tokyo Zodiac Murders_. The author explicitly writes it so you can solve it, and is even nice enough to give you the major hint and tell you to stop reading before his character solves the mystery.

To my everlasting shame, I couldn't solve it; this was my fault, and not the author's (as he indeed was playing it straight).
