if I make up a number that is not created by numerical methods, then maybe I am just defeating my built-in algorithms that would do better by reasoning in their native modes of uncertainty.

I must remember this post. I argue along those lines from time to time, though I'm pretty sure I think humans are much worse at math (and better at judgement) than you do, so I recommend against talking in probabilities more often.
