Re: I don't think anyone really knows the general requirements for AGI, and therefore nobody knows what (if any) kind of specialized hardware is necessary.
One thing which we might need - and don't yet really have - is parallelism.
True, there are FPGAs, but these are still a nightmare to use. Elsewhere parallelism is absurdly coarse-grained.
We probably won't need anything very fancy on the hardware front - just more speed and less cost, to make the results performance- and cost-competitive with humans.
