Eric makes a reasonable point in the comments: Lanier's argument about three-digit IQ giving an inaccurate impression of precision is highly dubious - since throwing away more of the measurements you have made and introducing rounding errors is itself pretty bad.

Once you have lost the data it has gone. Whereas if you have kept the data and you don't want it, you can always throw it away later.
