One major difference: LessWrong has a common (if not prevailing) view that the billion-year-scale future of most of the universe will be decided in the decade-scale future. In a sense, the last page of one book and the first page of a much greater one.
The Long Now seems less like "today's thinking will define the future" and more like "today's thinking needs to be extensible into the future"
