New discoveries in theoretical physics may someday have major utility payouts. My main reason for dropping physics is that there's not much marginal utility in another smart person going into physics.
That's an interesting principle, applied generally. Wouldn't it be a good thing for society for intelligent and knowledgeable people to go into fields where there aren't many intelligent and knowledgeable people? The first field I think of like this is nutrition, it just seems there is a lot of shallow thinking in that field.
