What does the community here think when it comes to climate change as a potential existential risk? [...] the potential consequences of ignoring this issue look to be quite severe indeed!

There is a world of difference between "severe" consequences, even world-changing and civilization-crippling severe, and existential risk. Existential risk means no future, astronomical waste. Even 99% of population dying doesn't come close to that.
