Also, why isn't the linking syntax the same for comments as articles?

That's because articles allow full usage of html tags (I believe) -- e.g. adding tables, using different fonts/colors/text sizes/multimedia if need etc -- but comments use the markdown syntax, which is much more convenient and easy to learn for the purposes of easy commenting/quoting text.

I think despite the discrepancy, the choices are good for their respective purposes.
