This part of Connection Theory seemed very interesting to me; I will say it in my own words, because I forgot the original words:

Each person has a few "life goals", the goals behind the smaller goals. People are updating on evidence... unless such update would mean (according to their current beliefs) that some of their "life goals" becomes unreachable.

Seems to me that it relates to the idea of leaving a line of retreat. The way to cross a possible valley of bad rationality in yourself or in other person is to build new knowledge in such sequence that it does not endanger your values in the process. Sometimes the web of irrational beliefs may be very difficult to disentangle.
