Individuals and society as a whole would be happier if everyone was drunk most of the time. However as alcoholism is low status we avoid it.

This seems clearly idiotic to me. Not only have we lived through decades where much of society was drinking alcohol at massive rates, we can also look at alcoholism rates in various countries today and they don't exactly correlate to happiness. The cultures in which alcoholism are high status (EG college students for one) don't seem to me to be particularly admirable or sustainable on a society wide level.
