Draco clearly has no more role in the story, as shown in the latest chapter.

I'm just not convinced this is true. If it is true, then practically every Draco-becoming-a-rationalist moment, along with every bit of saving Slytherin House was utterly pointless (from a story point of view). In other words, if all that was pointless, then I agree with you that not killing Draco is inexplicable.
