Draco clearly has no more role in the story, as shown in the latest chapter

"Clearly"? That rather assumes lots and lots of stuff. I don't share your assumptions regarding this.

All parties would be more distressed by events (particularly Lucius), but could still act in the same manner despite this whilst seeming believable.

If Draco died, Lucius would abandon his whole political game in a mad attempt to take vengeance on whoever he considered responsible -- Harrymort, Dumbledore, whoever.

Plus, the grief/ over Draco's death would shadow over Harry's worry for Hermione in a way, in a sense that we'd not be able to get a proper appreciation of the latter.
