Rent-paying is more that I try to feel how the world would be if it were true, then feel how the world would be if it were false and see which one feels closer to reality.
Useful applications aren't necessary, but they're nice bonuses when they exist. The application is working or not working is a quick check for the theory. It's a free, ready-made test.
