People at the upper end of the IQ spectrum get lonely for someone smarter to talk to. It's an emotional need for an intellectual peer.

Lots of really smart people here is something I find very attractive about LW.

(Of course, smart and stupid are orthogonal, and no-one does stupid quite as amazingly as really smart people.)

That doesn't privilege FAI, methinks, and seems too charitable as an after-the-fact explanation with not so much as a survey.
