I've not heard it specifically in the sense of altruism, but having a "hit by a bus" plan seems to be a standard part of programmer ethics. I'm finding your reframing very useful, even though the basic idea is very familiar to me from numerous such ethical discussions :)

Otherwise known as a project's "Bus factor", a fairly googlable term.
