No one has gotten any closer to becoming a space colonist since the 1970's, and we haven't seen the nanomachines Drexler promised us in the 1980's which can produce abundance and make us "immortal."

On the other hand, we do have nanomachines, which can do a number of interesting things, and we didn't have them a couple decades ago. We're making much more tangible progress towards versatile nanotechnology than we are towards space colonization.
