That is admirably concise, correct, and totally on target.
Is the meaning of this statement that it's a choice whether I consider me-at-different-times to be the same person as me-now?
That would be one way to look at it. Another would be to put aside the "same person?" question and just answer the "do I intend to work for the benefit of this future person?" question more directly, using the facts about causal connections, personality similarities, etc.
