Just for reference, this has been discussed on less wrong before in my post Waterfall ethics.
And I see I even commented on it, but hadn't remembered the discussion. Thanks for the backpointer.
Though I notice that the discussion then and now seems somewhat divergent. I feel like I learned something here that I don't get reading the previous discussion.
