Are you thinking on the margin? You don't control the priority function for humanity, only for yourself and those you influence. Even if slithiness were the most pressing issue, it doesn't follow that everyone should be working on it.

I think it's more about how annoying it is when someone shuts down or tries to shut down someone working on a shorter term issue by saying it won't matter anyway. It's safer to have people working both on the singularity and on how to not die from diseases even if the singularity will cure all diseases when it happens.
