Your analogy actually seems more plausible to me than gjm's. With a blowup doll and with Soylent, you get a less pleasurable version of the action (sex and eating), while also fulfilling your needs/impulses. People feel more of a "need" to have sex than they feel a "need" to procreate.
Even if gjm's was better, I've never seen someone receive 5 downvotes for an analogy that they think isn't quite as good as another, so it seems more likely that you've been downvoted because people who like Soylent didn't like you talking mean about it.
Are you implying that's a bad thing? I didn't downvote Lumifer's comment, but if someone thought that a comment amounting to little more that ‘boo $thing!’ doesn't belong on LW, even in the Open Thread, even if it happens to be denotationally correct (e.g. “The ultra-rich, who control the majority of our planet's wealth, spend their time at cocktail parties and salons while millions of decent hard-working people starve”), I could see where they're coming from.
No, not necessarily; that's a good point. I just thought it was interesting that all of the subsequent discussion centered around the merits of the analogies, but it seems that what most people really cared about was the pro- or anti-Soylent positions.
