What's the point of the up/down votes in the first place? If the object is reducing bias, doesn't making commenting a popularity contest run counter to this purpose?

Quality control. Ideally, people should not upvote/downvote based on conclusions they disagree with.

I recall hearing that the highest-karma comment ever was criticism MIRI, which would suggest that this works as intended. I'm not sure how to check this, though.
