Has something changed about the voting rules the last week or so? I started to get the "You don't have enough karma to downvote. You need three more points" message again. But it is always three points (no other number) even though I haven't lost karma and still am able to downvote some comments/sometimes.

How much you can downvote is limited by how much karma you have. So looks like you "spent" all your karma.

You seem to downvote quite a lot then, are you one of those "downvoting stalkers" we keep hearing about?

No. Do you think that I would go flaunting that here for no reason if I was? Mostly I just read a lot and don't write so much. And of course writing is what you get karma for.

What's weird is that I always am either 0 points short (able to downvote) or exactly three points short. Never one or two points. And my total karma has not decreased.

Looking at the code concerning this, "three" isn't hard-coded, it's calculated but the formula is a bit hairy and relies on cache, so there could be a bug somewhere.

Or it could be a coincidence :)
