Does anyone have experience with Wikipedia's feature to create your own collection of articles in the form of a book? My attempts to create one with formulae and diagrams don't look very nice and I'd like to have great Wikipedia articles ready on my Kindle for offline reading.

I compiled the Wikipedia book on atheism, and it appears to work fine:

Have you tried using Calibre combined with the Wiki Reader plug-in?

Not yet, but I'll have a look. If I use that does the result look better than Wikipedia's own tool?
