I haven't read it all - got sidetracked by exams and then stuff - but the first half is pretty good. Substantial and understandable (yum-yum, like a rich stew) even to people from different fields (I'm a botanist, with maybe only a bit more than the common knowledge of brain chemistry and very vague ideas about computers.) It can be downloaded as a .pdf from http://cs.oswego.edu/~malloy/Courses/Files/COG468/mythsmechanisms.pdf Try the first chapter (In a Nutshell) and see if it goes for you.
