I care more about dogs; after all we bred them hard-coded to love us. But in my personal intuitions of care, mice and dogs are certainly closer to each other than to chimps or birds.

Sure.

I didn't mean to say that I care about animals exactly as much as I'm related to them. There are many exceptions. (Yay tardigrades!) I'm just saying the correlation seems good enough to be worth noticing.
