exponential growth? There's more publications but they're on less revolutionary things.

AI is hard. the field can go years without any really massive revolutionary breakthroughs.

When it was young and there was a lot of low-hanging fruit there were lots of breakthroughs in quick succession from a small number of people which made people more optimistic than was warranted.
