I think it might be interesting to look at how scientists actually choose their fields of research, and how they navigate between what they can get funding to do and what they think is worth doing.

Root-Bernstein says that scientists have done some of their best work when (after doing conventional science for a while), they're tasked with solving a practical problem from a little outside their field.
