Similarly if I were going to undergo torture I would be very glad if my capacity to form long term memories would be temporarily disabled.

Those are not the same thing. They're not even remotely similar beyond both involving brain surgery.

Speciesism has always seemed like a straw-man to me.

Me too, but I never could persuade the people arguing for it of this fact :(

I was attempting to give an example of other ways in which I might find torture more palatable if I were modified first.
