FWIW, I've stopped using the Socratic Method, because, in my experience, it always elicits a strong and immediate negative reaction. People basically respond to it by saying, "stop asking me questions to which you obviously already have all the answers; do you think I'm stupid and wouldn't notice ?"
This is definitely a pitfall of the Socratic Method done badly. I suspect it really is possible to be more subtle about it, but that's tricky.
