I think your discussion about how to deal with the issues you bring up is good, but this also reminds me why I'm a bit annoyed with the whole EA movement taking over LW-dom in general. Basically, it looks to me awfully like a lot of people who have been tricked into pretending to care about something they don't actually care about, and using all their powers of rationality to maintain said pretense.
