Interdisciplinary, generally applicable knowledge is rarely taught explicitly. Yet it's important to have at least basic knowledge of many areas (as opposed to deep narrowly specialized knowledge), and to apply it to thinking about everything.
The Great Brain is Located Externally by Alicorn - People don't actually remember what they know, they only remember how to find it, and the fact that there is something to find. Thus, it's important to know about what's known in various domain, even without knowing the content.
