January 2011 Southern California Meetup
There will be a meetup for Southern California this Sunday, January 23, 2011 at 4PM and running for three to five hours. The meetup is happening at Marco's Trattoria. The address is:
8200 Santa Monica Blvd
West Hollywood, CA 90046
If all the people (including guests and high end group estimates) show up we'll be at the limit of the space with 24 attendees. Previous meetups had room for walk-ins and future meetups should as well, but this one is full. If you didn't RSVP in time for this one but want to get an email reminder when the February meetup is scheduled send me a PM with contact info.
December 2010 Southern California Meetup
A meetup in Southern California will occur on Sunday December 19, 2010. The meetup will start around 3:30PM and run for at least 2 hours and possibly 4 or 5. Anna Salamon and Yvain are very likely to be in attendance, as well as people from the last few meetups who may have projects to talk about, if are people are interested. Bring guests if you like. The location of the meetup will be...
...at the IHOP across from John Wayne Airport, about a mile from UC Irvine.
October 2010 Southern California Meetup
We're having the third SoCal LessWrong meetup this Saturday, the 23rd. It'll be held at this IHOP in Irvine, from 1PM to 8PM, in the upstairs meeting area.
For those that haven't yet come, the last two were quite successful bringing 13 and 16 people respectively, and there was plenty of intelligent and friendly discussion.
Make sure to comment if you have suggestions for how to improve on the last one, if you can give/need a ride, or just to say you're coming.
September 2010 Southern California Meetup
The second LessWrong meetup for Southern California will happen on Saturday September 25th, 2010! The meetup will start at 1PM and probably run for 4 or 5 hours in the Platt Campus Center of Harvey Mudd College. Thanks are due to the Harvey Mudd Future Tech Club for the location.
We will be meeting in a conference room with tables, chairs, whiteboards, and a projector. Based on the July SoCal LW Meetup we discovered that the most interesting thing was to have small group conversations but that turned out to be tricky in a pub. This time we're optimizing for conversation, but pizza will almost assuredly be ordered and there will be free cookies and soda!
The President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology is soliciting ideas
The question that the ideas are supposed to be in response to is:
What are the critical infrastructures that only government can help provide that are needed to enable creation of new biotechnology, nanotechnology, and information technology products and innovations -- a technological congruence that we have been calling the “Golden Triangle" -- that will lead to new jobs and greater GDP?"
Here are links to some proposed ideas that you should vote for, assuming you agree with them. You do have to register to vote, but the email confirmation arrives right away and it shouldn't take much more than two minutes of your time altogether. Why should you do this? The top voted ideas from this request for ideas will be seen by some of the top policy recommendation makers in the USA. They probably won't do anything like immediately convene a presidential panel on AGI, but we are letting them know that these things are really important.
Research the primary cause of degenerative diseases: aging / biological senescence
Explore proposals for sustaining the economy despite ubiquitous automation
Establish a Permanent Panel or Program to Address Global Catastrophic Risks, Including AGI
Does anyone have any other ideas? Feel free to submit them directly to ideascale, but it may be a better idea to first post them in the comments of this post for discussion.
July 2010 Southern California Meetup
There will be a meetup for people from lesswrong in Los Angeles, on Friday July 9th, 2010 at 3PM. Roundtrip carpooling from San Diego is definitely available and other carpooling options may develop. The time and location are designed to make it possible for people from lesswrong to get together and talk. Later, anyone interested should be able to walk to the first meeting of the LA Chapter of the SENS Foundation where Aubrey de Grey will be attending. It should be a good time if you can make it! See below the cut for more details.
