We will be meeting in the courtyard to talk about steelmanning - creating a stronger version of an argument against your position to respond to. The Less Wrong Wiki has a page defining the term with a link to the blog post that originated it, and Ozymandias wrote a blog post outlining a couple potential failure modes.
Upcoming meetups:
- Sep. 25: Outdoor Fun & Games
- Oct. 2: Math Discussion
- Oct. 9: Games Discussion

We’ll be meeting to work on projects!
Near the beginning, we’ll go around and talk about what we’ll be working on, then do a couple of pomodoros quietly. At some point we’ll break into general conversations and socializing.
For help getting into the building, please call (or text, with a likely-somewhat-slower response rate): three zero one, three five six, five four two four.
Format:
We meet and start hanging out at 6:15, but don’t officially start doing the meetup topic until 6:45-7 to accommodate stragglers. Usually there is a food order that goes out before we start the meetup topic.
About these meetups:
The mission of the SF LessWrong meetup is to provide a fun, low-key social space with some structured interaction, where new and non-new community members can mingle and have interesting conversations. Everyone is welcome.
We explicitly encourage people to split off from the main conversation or diverge from the topic if that would be more fun for them (moving side conversations into a separate part of the space if appropriate). Meetup topics are here as a tool to facilitate fun interaction, and we certainly don’t want them to inhibit it.

A discussion of books/podcasts/talks/movies that you thought may be interesting for your fellow rationalists. Of cause you can suggest another discussion topic or activity. This time the meeting starts a bit later so we can go for some food/drinks and socializing afterwards.

Our speaker is Alon Rozental, Lead Data Scientist at Amobee.
The talk:
Sentiment analysis is about the modest task of taking a text and figuring out what it's positive or negative about. Turns out it's rather hard. This talk will discuss one approach to the problem, which issues it tackles (like millions sentences per day and high level negation), where it falls flat, plans to improve the process and how the heck do you deal with an emoticon of a dolphin or and eggplant.
Meeting each other to chat at 19:00, presentation at 19:30
Amobee, Menachem Begin 125, Floor 36, Tel Aviv

You're invited to bring whatever you'd like to see at Park Day - balls, frisbees, food, etc. (Also, consider taking measures against the sun.) We'll carry a green blanket so you can recognize us. The idea is to gather outside near the listed address at the park entrance first, but probably walk elsewhere soon. If you can't find us or there's something else, please call me (Steven) at 510-6844565.

The next meetup for Less Wrong Melbourne (other than the social dinner on 3rd Sept) will be Saturday 10th September. Turn up at 3:30pm to socialise, because we start at 4pm sharp.
This month we're having lightning talks on various stimulating and intellectually challenging topics. We still have a couple of spots, so if you'd like to give a short talk (around 5 min) please leave a comment. Tentative topics so far include:
- An equation for global carbon emissions and what it tells us about mitigation options.
- Emergence - Eliezer doesn't believe in it, but is there a case for it?
- Telomeres and longevity.
We'll finish with some strategic self-improvement options (none of which involve walking across breaking boards with your bare hands or being asked to chant). At about 6:30pm some of us will probably head for dinner in the CBD, and you are welcome to join us.
WHEN: Saturday 10th September, 3:30pm to 6:30pm
WHERE: Ross House, 247 Flinders Lane. Level 3 (Jenny Florence Room). If you have any trouble finding the venue or getting in, text or call Chris on 0439 471 632. For the greatest convenience, prompt service and general awesomeness, please arrive around 3:30pm.
WHAT'S THIS ABOUT?: The Less Wrong Melbourne Rationality Dojos are self-improvement sessions for those committed to the art of rationality and personal growth. We welcome new members who are interested in exploring rationality. We're "aspiring rationalists" and always open to learn.
