[Link] Atlantic Interview with Nick Bostrom - "We're Understimating the Risk of Human Extinction"
My apologies if I've missed this posted anywhere else (google and my scanning the sidebar didn't turn it up). I'm not sure that there's much that will be new to those who have been following existential risk elsewhere, but it's nice to see an article like this in a relatively mainstream publication. Bostrom discusses issues such as the concept of existential risk and certain specific types of existential risk, why we as humans underestimate that risk, possible strategies to address existential risk, the simulation argument, how Hollywood and literature don't generally portray existential risk helpfully, and other issues.
2005 short story loosely about P-zombies
I thought some of you might enjoy this 2005 story published in Asimov's:
Second Person, Present Tense by Daryl Gregory (plus some of the author's notes on the story)
The story involves a a drug that (for a period of time) turns someone into a P-zombie.
It's currently available for free on the Asimov's page, but it may only be there temporarily.
Chicago Meetup: Sunday, August 1 at 2:00 pm
We’re holding the Chicago meetup discussed here on Sunday, August 1, 2010 at 2:00 pm. The tentative location is the Corner Bakery at the corner of State and Cedar (1121 N. State St.), but we’re also happy to move the meetup further up to the North side as has been previously discussed, if anyone has a suggestion for a good venue.
We will post any updates here as well as to our Chicago LW meetup Google group. Please comment here if you plan to attend. We'll have a table-top sign to help you identify us.
We’re looking forward to a second successful Chicago meetup and hope to see some old and new faces!
Chicago Meetup
Hey Chicagoans and any Midwesterners from further afield who would like to join us, let’s start building a vibrant Less Wrong community here in the Windy City!
Steven0461 and I are proposing the first ever Less Wrong meetup in Chicago. The meet-up will be held at 2 pm on June 6 at the C-Shop in Hyde Park on the University of Chicago campus, which is located on the South Side of Chicago. The address is 5706 S. University Ave. Here is a map of the relevant part of the University of Chicago; the C-Shop is in the Reynolds Club building. We will have a Less Wrong sign on the table so you can identify us.
Steven and I have both been Visiting Fellows at SIAI, lived at the SIAI house, and attended the Bay Area Less Wrong meetups, and we’re excited about introducing Less Wrong meetups to the great city of Chicago.
