Tell us more. Much more, in excruciating detail. I am reasonably sure I remember reading Eliezer write about the impossiblity of what you just described, i.e. getting a Ph.D. without necessarily having an advisor, funding or a Bachelor's degree.

How gnarly is the reddit/lesswrong codebase? $5000 worth sounds terrifying to one with a shaky, Learn Python the Hard Way knowledge of programming and very basic familiarity with html, css and sql. But I'm probably going to be taking 4 hours a day five days a week for a month this summer to try and make myself hirable as a junior programmet this summer and work that valuable would make an awesome portfolio piece, paid or not. It would certainly make one a shoo in for Hacker School.

On the whole, the results revealed high levels of validity for the teacher-judgment measures. The studies revealed, however, some variability across teachers in accuracy levels and suggested the operation of certain other moderator variables.

Teachers' ratings of children's academic abilities, classroom skills, and personal-social characteristics were highly predictive of subsequent school achievement. Although teachers tended to be more positive toward girls, within each sex ratings were predictive of future performance. Teacher ratings were more predictive of scholastic success than ratings made by mothers. (MV)

I highly recommend just keeping a diary of the correct size with an appropriately sized pen with you at all times. A Moleskine with a pen in it has served me well not that they're tools handed down from Heaven or anything. Whether they're emotioins, thoughts or passing fancies, writing has helped me. More emotional shit than anything else. I don't (re)read it much but just writing is an excellent way of getting self-awareness when it comes to emotions. Saying them would likley work near as well but writing is a great deal easier.

Man, you are a machine. I go days without writing in a diary that lives in my pocket, you write well researched essays and do research. How many days do you not write something?
