Would move into one if it was where I wanted to live, but I'm tied to Canberra for the next couple of years. If Melbourne did this I'd be really tempted.

Meetup : Canberra Secular Solstice

Discussion article for the meetup : Canberra Secular Solstice

WHEN: 18 December 2016 05:00:00PM (+1100)

WHERE: Nara Peace Park, Canberra

Canberra’s first secular solstice celebration! Of course picnicking is an excellent way to celebrate, bring a dish! Preferably vegetarian/vegan/reducetarian, and if you get it sorted ahead of time post what you’re bringing to avoid clashes.

Also: * Light candles and try to keep them going against the probable wind * Talk about and list all the things that have gone well this year. It’s the perfect symbolic time to celebrate all the good things that have happened in the world, more locally, personally, this year. * Discuss plans for the next year * Make predictions about next year

If it rains, we’ll retreat to one of the covered areas in the park.

If you’re having trouble, message me on 0424477339. See you there!

It's back! Hopefully with fewer technical issues, since we'll try jitsi this time. I'll post the link on the night. https://www.facebook.com/events/929800947145935/ Tell us what you've learned recently, ask for rationalist advice, talk about cool stuff, show me your cat, and so on. We tend to go until late, so if you can't make it for the official time, you're welcome to pop in anyway. People outside Australia are welcome too! We've heard from New Zealanders, Europeans, Americans...

I think if I put a LW meetup on, well, Meetup, I might draw some people out of the woodwork. In the description, I'd give a brief explanation of the word "rationalist" (as "Boise Rationalists" will probably catch more eyes than "Boise LessWrong Meetup"). I'd also include links to this site, HPMOR, and Khaneman's books, and a blurb about eventual goals. What's your opinion on that strategy? I know that when I moved to the area, I browsed Meetup for interesting groups and attended several. Talking to others, I've learned that they did the same. If I'd seen "Boise Rationalists," I would have been interested.

There's a group that's only a seven-hour drive from my location, so I could make that a few times a year.

I hadn't thought of the EA angle! That might be more palatable to some newcomers.

I like the sound of that strategy, although here I must admit I'm inexperienced in actually using it.

I'm reminded of Ozy's posts on radical acceptance, specifically this one.
