Well in a sense U(++,-) itself contradicts μ. After all in when given heroin the human seeks it out and acquires more utility than not seeking it out, why doesn't the human seek it out volunterily?

Imagine a drug with no effect except that it cures its own (very bad) withdrawal symptoms. There's no benefit to taking it once, but once you've been exposed, it's beneficial to keep taking more because not taking it makes you feel very bad.

Random thought: Try listening to MIDI samples of classical music with different instruments - it might be easier to take the music apart that way than by listening to real performers with real instruments.

Treatment for mental illness (and possibly organic brain trauma) seems priority #1 here...

Sure. Measure a human's input and output. Play back the recording. Or did you mean across all possible cases? In the latter case see http://lesswrong.com/lw/pa/gazp_vs_glut/

Yeah, I meant in all possible cases. Start with a Brain In A Vat. Scan that brain and implement a GLUT in Platospace, then hook up the Brain-In-A-Vat and the GLUT to identical robots, and you'll have one robot that's conscious and one that isn't, right?

Can you make "something" with the same input-output behavior as a human, and have that thing not be conscious? It doesn't have to be atom-by-atom identical.

Honestly, I'm not sure I will. The response on LW continues to be aversively critical, so I crosspost here relatively rarely. I really appreciate your comment though, in light of that.

If you want to stay on top of my posts, I recommend my newsletter or rss.

Although perhaps your saying "continue to crosspost" is less about you wanting to read my writing in particular and more you just generally wanting LW to have long-form content on it... in which case, well, we'll see.

I had thought I already read your blog, but it turns out I was mistaken; I had you confused with the "Minding Our Way" blog. Adding the feed now.

And yeah, I really like seeing long-form content on LessWrong.
