Nick will explain one of the most basic concepts in economics, the demand and supply curves, and how they interact to determine the price and quantity of goods produced. Then he will present a post-Keynesian critique of the demand and supply curve model that argues that demand curves can be any shape and that the supply curve can't be determined. The meta lesson will be in practicing reacting to new evidence against pre-existing beliefs, and comparing different models of reality. As always, vegan snacks will be provided.

Meetup : Canberra: Would I Lie To You?
Discussion article for the meetup : Canberra: Would I Lie To You?
Would I Lie to You is a British comedy panel show where participants tell stories which may be true or a lie. We will watch some (randomly selected) episodes, and give our probabilities of each story being true or false. At the end, I will log-score the results, and the winner will receive eternal pride. As always, vegan snacks will be provided.

Share your LW-contrarian opinions! That is, (ideally) come prepared with some opinions you have that most other people at the meetup might not, and reasons why your opinion is true. Examples might include:
-We should return to feudal societal structure.
-Dualism is the true theory of consciousness.
-We don't have to worry about unfriendly AI.
-Eating non-human animals is perfectly OK/insect suffering is the most important moral problem (depends on who you want to chat with).
Come and enjoy the discussion! As always, vegan snacks will be provided.

Alexa will give a talk about using rewards to fight akrasia. Where is it better to set up external rewards and where should we focus on intrinsic motivation? Techniques include making short-term actions feel related to long-term ones as well as actually being so, to increase motivation and reduce boredom and apathy, and using intrinsic motivation to stop worrying about whether an instrumental action will work instead of just doing it.

Note the change in location
We will introduce the idea of cooking as a set of easy templates or methods, which different ingredients can be applied to, rather than as a massively large set of recipes to be memorised and followed. We’ll cover the reasons for the presence and order of common steps in these formulas (which means you know which ones can be left out in other recipes). Ways to make meals more efficient (effort or time wise) will also be discussed.
Dahl (lentil stew) will be cooked and available for eating.
I will be meeting people in the foyer of Bruce Hall, and we will leave for South Kitchen at 6:15. If you do not know where South Kitchen is, please arrive before 6:15.

Buck spent the first half of 2014 in San Francisco, spending a lot of time with the Effective Altruism community there. He learned a lot from this experience. In his talk, he'll provide an introduction to effective altruism, its history and its major cause areas, the biggest things that are happening in it at the moment, and the coolest things which are coming up for the movement in the future.
