I'll be there. Looking forward to it!
Meetup : Philadelphia Meetup: Against Rationalization
Discussion article for the meetup : Philadelphia Meetup: Against Rationalization
We'll be having our next meetup on Thursday, April 26th at 7 P.M. at the Starbucks in Macy's Center City (same location as for our immediate past meetup on macroeconomics).
Topic of discussion will be the Against Rationalization subsequence of the critical How to Actually Change Your Mind sequence of Less Wrong.
Those interested in attending the meetup are kindly requested to please complete the following three tasks in advance of the 26th:
- Read the articles (if you haven't already)!
- Bring at least one question concerning the articles to discuss with the group (i.e maybe something which confused you, or which you think would make for thought-provoking discussion).
- Bring in a real-world example/case study which illustrates a concept from the articles, or else why you find said concepts important (or not important!). Your example/case study can be from your own life, someone else's life, world news, or pretty much whatever other field suits your needs best.
The Starbucks closes at 9 P.M. that night, so we should have a good 2 hours to get through all the material the above three tasks should (hopefully) fuel in the conversation.
Looking forward to seeing many of you again soon!

UPDATE: We've moved the location to a Starbucks (also near Suburban station) which closes at 9 P.M., as we discovered earlier this week that the previous location would have closed at 7!
Topic material and start time will be the same...we're just moving the meeting place a short walking distance away.
I'll be there. Is anyone driving from somewhere near South Philly?
I'll ask on our mailing list. Will you still be able to get to the event if you can't get a ride?
I'll get there about 5:30 P.M.; look for me to be wearing jeans, a white button-down shirt, and a suit jacket.
Meetup : Philadelphia LW: Macroeconomics crash course and general meetup

We'll be meeting at the Starbucks in Macy's Center City (conveniently located near Suburban Station for you traingoers!) from 6:30 - 8:30 P.M.
This week's featured topic will be a "crash course" in macroeconomics from one of our members, who also happens to be a graduate student in economics, in continuation of some fairly lengthy and interesting economic discussions that came out of our first meetup in January (not that you shouldn't come if you weren't there...please feel free to stop by regardless of your history with either LW meetups or economics in general!).
Agenda will also include general self-improvement, planning future meetups, and, of course, better getting to know new members and attendees from last meetup alike. We hope to see you there!
Also: please feel free to request an invitation to our Google group (http://groups.google.com/group/lesswrong-philadelphia) if you would like to discuss meetup ideas (including the details of this upcoming one) in real time, and/or would generally like to start talking to people prior to convening in meat space!

Consider this one a "just for fun" event, rather than a "hard" meetup (such as we will be having on Wednesday the 15th!) dealing with more serious rationality-related topics.
The Woodmere Art Museum in Chestnut Hill holds jazz concerts every Friday. A couple of us are attending this Friday's concert, "Tribute to Miles Davis: A Kinda Blue Valentine" featuring Philadelphia trumpeter Tony Smith; feel free to come out and meet some area Less-Wrongers, particularly if you weren't in the area for our last meetup!
Tickets are $15 for Woodmere members or $20 for the general public, and are available at the door or online (http://woodmereartmuseum.org/music.html). Feel free to message me for my cell in case you're afraid you might have trouble finding the place!
If turnout is good and people are interested, we may also venture out into Chestnut Hill or elsewhere for food/coffee after the concert ends at 8. Hope to see you there!

I've been pretty excited to meet other LessWrongians for a while. Most "rationalists" in my life are so on a strictly titular level, though many of them are otherwise bright. Since I'm in Camden county I'm more or less restricted to the Philly area and I'm glad meetups are starting again. The biggest problem is that I work out of town every weekend and probably won't be able to attend any of them unless I get enough notice to request time off. I'm serious about this and would gladly eschew work responsibilities for a LW workshop. Otherwise, what is the likelihood of a meetup being planned for a Tuesday or Wednesday?
Grif, I've added a poll (see my most recent post) that should give us a better idea of who is available on what days. Hopefully this will give us a better idea of what date and time might work best for as many people as possible!
Hi everyone, just a couple of notes before the meetup tomorrow at 2 P.M.:
1) If you would like to have my cell number on hand in case you can't find the place, think you'll be running late, etc., feel free to message me. I should be able to check my inbox up until 1 P.M. tomorrow.
2) Since it sounds like we'll have to do some precision scheduling if we want to schedule regular meetups that most of our members can actually attend, please fill out the Doodle poll at http://www.doodle.com/s2afikbngrz3d42z to let me know what days of the week you are generally available (ignore the exact dates...Doodle wouldn't let me remove them).
3) I appreciate everyone's flexibility with the location for this first meetup; since it sounds like our membership extends from Western Philly suburbs to Center City to South Jersey, we can definitely try some other locations for future meetups to keep everyone's travel time as fair as possible (something we can also discuss tomorrow).
Looking forward to meeting everyone tomorrow! I plan to sit upstairs, and I will have a sign up so we can all find each other. :-)

Two updates on this for anyone planning on attending (or thinking of attending) who hasn't seen our mailing list in the last two hours or so:
