It's interesting that Yvain credited The Great Filter with the huge standard deviations seen in the existence of aliens question. I don't recall seeing any qualifier about conscious or intelligent beings. When in doubt, blame Cached Thoughts :)
Also, does observable mean within our future or past light cone?
