I'm likely to come (70%) , and could present if desired :)

I'm using my built in camera on my mac, so can't turn it. Do you have the option to turn my video off and on? I figure its probably better to have on for the sense of socialness, but I certainly don't need to have it on.

Also, not really sure what to do about chatting on there or not. I got the sense that some people might get annoyed when there is a lot of chat, but others want to connect. I'm not sure what is optimal. I think one nice thing would be if we could have a set of guidelines/expectations.

It would be nice to have linked rooms, like a study room and a more chatty room that people can pop back and forth on.

Another potential useful feature would be if everyone was on the same pomodoro timer, so that the room is consistently quiet 25 mins then chat 5.

Dreeves and other beeminder people used to do pomodoro sessions virtually together starting on the hour, I found value in that. (this is where I got the scheduled pomodoro sessions idea from) that I had suggested to you!

Shannon, this sounds really valuable! Thanks to you and Mqrius for kicking this off.

I just wanted to mention that if there's demand for more social features in Beeminder, we're definitely listening. (Outsiders often tell us we should have more social features but LessWrong (and similar communities like Quantified Self) are our bread and butter so if we hear it here we'll pay more attention.)

I enjoyed the pomodoro sessions we were doing in the Beeminder chat :)

My comments: Seeing people was great, actual ritual was looong, and strongly triggered my ADHD. Which was mostly mitigated by me amusing myself with shiny led gloves.

She means being proactive. If you want something to happen, you do it, or you make it happen however you can.

For example, there's a local meetup group that we've had a couple meetings of - but we don't have a schedule, we only have meetings when someone is proactive - they say "I've found the meeting place, the activity, I've emailed the people, come by, I will certainly be there, I will make sure we have a good time no matter how many people show up." And then we have a meetup.

I'm reminded of the line from The Caine Mutiny that naval ships were designed by geniuses to be run by idiots. If you want to do something, you can either design the ship, or you can just run an existing ship. If we had schedules and a book full of activities and a large group on a mailing list, someone with all the proactiveness of a bag of rocks could make meetups happen. But we don't have those things, so nothing happens unless someone is feeling "agent-ey."

This mirrors my own experience - the way I've found to have the most influence, and get the most done is often not being the one completing the tasks, but rather the one creating and documenting the process/procedures, and teaching and training other people to do the work.

It's also far more lucrative from a career standpoint! :D

I've switched to butter tea but it's not as obtainable on-the-go, and also has less caffeine.

I'm debating just using starbucks VIA packets, but Dave would probably claim those have higher risks of mold :/

I've noticed blending makes a huge difference, but is it really neccesary to preheat the blender? I'm not even sure how I would do that conveniently.

Comment author: Jolly 05 July 2012 04:40:23AM 0 points [-]

I never preheat my blender (but note, I'm using a stick, immersible style blender) And the way to preheat would be to make extra hot water and dump it in the blender.

Aluminum foil. Use a gluestick to put it over your bedroom windows. Now there is darkness, and you can sleep. This made a huge quality-of-life difference to me, and I felt very silly for not doing it 10 years earlier. (A sleep mask, which I previously used, was not nearly as good a solution.)

Wow! that is a great idea. Here I was using blackout cloth and nails... Edit: A friend of mine informs me that this is commonly used by meth labs...and may attract unwanted attention from authority figures?

That sounds disgusting to me. Is it a serious suggestion? :P

Totally serious. I do prefer coffee for mTOR impacts, particularily in combo with exercise/intermittent fasting, but tea has it's own set of benefits. Butter Tea

Using a pair of earplugs every night is a huge quality of life difference.

For you personally or for everyone?

Comment author: Jolly 05 July 2012 04:34:54AM 1 point [-]

It probably will improve sleep quality, but I have yet to run A/B tests and measure it with my Zeo/Fitbit.
