Thanks, this is helpful. I do need to design a ritual for this year's Burning Man camp.

The theme is the "Temple of Salt" and I'd like to invite the public to come to the "Salt Ritual". So far I plan on having a pink rock salt statue of Lot's Wife for people to lick but the ritual needs a bit more to it and I'm very open to ideas.

I'm indifferent to emotional appeals by nature rather than averse to them as a defense mechanism.

I don't think this community is particularly bad at getting things done or working together, and I certainly reject the unspoken idea that the people here are so brilliant, if only we could get them pumped up, they'd go out and save the world. People don't do things here for the same reasons people don't do things everywhere: doing stuff is hard and nobody has any good ideas anyway.

Data point: I do the same thing, and I wasn't.

Can you elucidate why, and indeed what it is you're actually doing when you pray/worship?

People often make claims that even atheists have "God-shaped holes" that they need to fill. I have never felt this way, and I have no visceral understanding of what others mean when they say that they do feel such a thing

From the other side of the spectrum: I pray to a god I know doesn't exist, just because I feel a compulsion. Many atheists do not understand what the need to worship feels like. It's not about being scared of life and wanting a sky-daddy to comfort you. It's not about trying to outsource critical thinking. For some people, worshiping a god is just something you've got to do. Like taking a stretch after being cramped in an airplane.
