In that case once I'm there, we should perhaps meet up. (Right now am about to pack up computer and such and go to airport... again. :p)

Virtual me will be in charge of bio me's interactions with the outside world? Seems like some fairly basic decision theory stuff, if nothing else implies that I'll be reasonably good to me. :) (At least sufficiently that I don't have to worry about me being despotic toward me.)

(also, see the edit. Had to reschedule to friday.)

Off to Alice Springs

Am about to pack up computer then go to the airport to start a sequence of flights to give this a try.

I already have a room in a hostel booked for a few nights for when I get there, and will see how stuff goes.

Anyways, since there's been on and off discussion on this, just thought I'd post that I'm actually giving this a try.

(Will likely be a day or two before I can reply/comment/etc, given length of flights, etc.)

EDIT: Ugh. You take care of one aspect of the planning fallacy, and fail elsewhere. Long story short, I missed my flight and had to reschedule it to friday.

EDIT2: Packing up computer and going off to airport. Again. This time will be early.

EDIT3: And am here. and am exhausted. :) Will start looking for work stuff tomorrow. There's a job board at this hostel, but apparently there's not much currently. But right now am rather sleep deprived.

Hey, are you still in Alice?

Psy-Kosh14 May 2012 08:55:23PM3 points [-]

Besides, the subject matters of the two have significant overlap. Where would you put formal analysis/development of various decision theories, for example?

Psy-Kosh13 May 2012 06:54:43AM4 points [-]

Well, following through in the sense that my flight is this coming wednesday (as in, in a few days), actually. :)

I'm going without a job lined up. And I'll find out how it works out. I don't have data points for you so much as "about to perform the experiment"

Interestingly enough, that's also why I liked the older seasons of Mythbusters. You'd see much more of the planning/preparation for their tests, including all the safety considerations.

ie, they'd do the usual "don't try this at home", but then you'd actually see just how much planning/etc it takes to do such things properly and safely.

Exercise idea that may simultaneously teach this and help illustrate notion of Locating the Hypothesis: A prize/treasure hunt in which you make them make you be specific. ("you", of course, being understood to mean whoever's teaching them.)

ie, hide some prize (money, for example) somewhere in the building or such. Tell them you will answer their questions about where the prize is, but they might have to work a bit to ask the right questions.

You: "Ask me where the prize is." Them: "Where is the prize?" You: "Somewhere. You're going to have to do better than that."

Them: "Is the prize in this room?" You: "yes"/"no" (depending on whether the prize actually is in the room, of course.)

Them: "which room is it in?" etc etc etc...

It's already established that obtaining a crushed ingredient will let you access the strength involved in crushing it. So obtaining an ingredient that had to be taken by invoking extreme powerful magic might let you access that...

Either Dumbledore or Quirrel took it, or it's long since locked away in the Department of Mysteries.

But yeah, as JoshuaZ points out, just as easily could be a Potion-of-Death. (Or heck, "potion-of-anthropomorphic-personification")
