How do you track and control your spending? Disregarding financial privacy I started paying with card for everything which allows me to track where I do spend my money but not really on what. I find that I in general spend less than what I earn because spending money somehow hurts.

MoneyDashboard.com - links directly to my credit cards and bank accounts. I hear that the US equivalent is mint.com

So the price of the future will reflect the best aggregate prediction of the future value of the asset.

Well, technically speaking the price of the future will reflect the capital-weighted opinions of the market participants. That is not necessarily the "best aggregate prediction" -- it could be, but there are no guarantees.

A couple of points:

  1. You don't agree to "buy it today", you "agree to buy" it today. Both exchange of payments and assets take place in the future

  2. The price of a future isn't determined by prediction any more than the asset is. The price of a future is given explicitly by the price of the underlying, suitably adjusted for cost of carry and cost of financing

I am repeating myself so much, but..

Why is this posted a day early (when the prior thread was posted earlier than it should've been solely so they can start on Monday).? And way more impotantly, why is the open_thread tag not there. Can you please at least include it (it is important for the sidebar functionality, among other things).

I often rant about people posting the open threads incorrectly when there is so little about it (posting it after the previous one is over, making it last 7 days and adding a simple tag), but this is the 3rd OT posted this week. People specifically go out of their way to post an Open Thread and then don't even do the minimum. I was suspicious that people actually do it for the 3-4 karma they get, but Nancy has 18,8k, so this is likely not the reason.

I am sorry, if I sound rude in any way, but please can someone explain this phenomenon to me. I notice that I am confused.

How much appetite would there be for shorter windows on the Open Threads? Having one every 4 days would have some advantages:

  • The material would be spread out more evenly through time, rather than having the majority of the posts in the first few days of a new thread
    • The start day would vary over time
