Meetup : Brussels - Neuroatypicality
Discussion article for the meetup : Brussels - Neuroatypicality
According to a 2010 unscientific internet survey, over 5% of LessWrong users have Asperger syndrome, which is maybe 25 times more than the general population.
I know, I know. On a website that's all about hyper-rationality and breaking down social interactions into their game theory origin in order to design an AI that can do them better? Shocking.
In this month's meetup (what little of it we'll spend being on-topic), we will discuss what a boring world it would be if we were all the same, and how to rephrase this saying to appeal to people who think boring is good.
We will meet at 1 pm at "La Fleur en papier doré", close to the Brussels Central station. Depending on the weather, we may also spend some time outside. The meeting will be in English to facilitate both French and Dutch speaking members.
If you are coming for the first time, please consider filling out this one minute form to share your contact information.

(Because of a scheduling conflict with the Berlin community meetup, April's meetup will not be on the second Saturday of the month. It's one week later.)
No serious theme for this month. We'll probably chat about Berlin, play boardgames that aren't rationalist training, and just talk about anything we want.

This month we're stealing an idea from the Atlanta group: using Wits & Wagers for confidence calibration (and a little Fermi estimation, which I keep saying we'll do and we never end up doing). It's like a trivia game, except you don't need to know anything to win! (errata: you do need to know that you don't know anything. else.) We may spice it up with some paranoid debating.
I also have a game related to the Memory Palace, and another one related to the Ultimatum Game. But we may not have time to do everything.
If someone can get their hands on an English copy of Wits & Wagers (or Gambit 7, please tell me.

On one train track: three transhuman babies. On the other train track, a utility monster who regularly paints masterpieces. Next to you on the bridge, a very fat blue-spotted giraffe, last of its kind. What's a moral agent to do? And what if the giraffe... was your mother? All these questions and more won't be answered in this month's meetup.
We may have to taboo a lot of words in the process, so recommended reading: http://lesswrong.com/lw/nu/taboo_your_words/
This meetup marks the two-years anniversary of the LW Brussels meetup group. There will be cake. It is all right to eat the cake, as that cake would've grown up to become Hitler. (It is also all right to bring cake.)
We will meet at 1 pm at La Fleur en papier doré, close to the Brussels Central station. The meeting will be in English to facilitate both French and Dutch speaking members.

When will self-driving cars become the norm? How soon until an AI passes the Turing Test, and how soon afterwards will we all be out of a job? Which organization will be the first to unleash uncontrolled all-consuming nanomachines upon the world? That is what we'll discuss this month (until the conversation goes wildly off-topic, as it usually does). If you've read anything interesting recently about new technologies and future trends, please share.
Fermi estimates and predictionbook.com will be involved.
In other news, and for at least the next six months, the Brussels meetup group has a page on Meetup.com. It's for recruitment purposes only, but the meetups will be announced there too. If you find that more convenient than subscribing to our Google Group, feel free to join it (link below).

This month's topic: time! Are you struggling with the planning fallacy? Do you have scientific knowledge and/or science-fiction recommendations to share? Have you been stuck in the 14th of December 2013 for the past thousand years? If you have, there are worse places to spend that afternoon than with LW Brussels.
I'll try to find some kind of relevant experiment or game we can do, to continue the streak. Suggestions welcome.
From a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, we will meet at 1 pm at La Fleur en papier doré, close to the Brussels Central station. The meeting will be in English to facilitate both French and Dutch speaking members. Time travelers, please come incognito.

This month's topic: memory. Read some interesting research? Have a niggling worry that your entire life started last week and any memory prior to that is a fabrication? Come share! I'm experimenting with the memory palace/method of loci; if I'm successful I might try and do the party trick.
As on every second Saturday of the month, we will meet at 1 pm at La Fleur en papier doré, close to the Brussels Central station. The meeting will be in English to facilitate both French and Dutch speaking members.

Second Saturday of the month is coming up. As usual, we will meet at 1 pm at La Fleur en papier doré, close to the Brussels Central station. If you feel like an intelligent discussion and are in the neighborhood, consider dropping by. The meeting will be in English to facilitate both French and Dutch speaking members.
There's an interest in games and game design in the group, so I thought we might make this the official topic for this meetup. Have you read anything about it lately? Is there an interesting game you think we should try out? Any game idea you've been sitting on?
(I don't expect we'll only talk about games though.)
