WHERE: 8 Clifton Terrace, Edinburgh, EH12 5DR

As usual, this is a static copy of the canonical details, available here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1667702333459781/

We'll meet at Platform 5 cafe, opposite Haymarket station, at 2pm. At 3:45pm we'll be at The Melville, a couple of minutes walk away. If you don't know who we are, we'll make ourselves recognisable with Bayes' Theorem in big letters!

This time our agenda will be:

1 - Brief intros, and any rational wins or fails over the last month

2 - A Fermi estimation game

3 - Discussion of Part H of the Rationality book, chapters 81 to 86. This section is, "Against Doublethink", and it's a relatively short one :-)

But at the time of posting, these are the details:

The September meetup will be on Sunday the thirteenth, in Glasgow. We'll start at 2pm at the Nero opposite Queen Street Station, and then move around the corner to Waxy O'Connors at 3:30pm.

This month's rough agenda is:

1 - Intros. What's the most (or least!) rational thing you did in the last month?

2 - A short Fermi estimation intro and game

3 - Discussion of part G of the Rationality book, "Against Rationalization", which is chapters 67 to 80.

We'll try to cover that in the cafe before moving to Waxy's. In Waxy's, we talk about whatever takes our fancy!

Locations: Cafe Nero - 1a Dundas Street, Glasgow G1 2AH Waxy O'Connor's - 44 W George St, Glasgow G2 1DH

The two are 30s walk apart.

As usual, this note is a mirror of the canonical meetup note, which is here: https://www.facebook.com/events/862671740491601/

But at the time of posting, these are the details:

The August meetup will be on the ninth, in Edinburgh. We'll start at two at the Clock Cafe, on Dalry Street (http://www.clockdiner.co.uk/). At three thirty we'll move to The Haymarket, a few minutes walk away on West Maitland Street (http://www.nicholsonspubs.co.uk/haymarketedinburgh/).

On the agenda for this month will be - at least - this:

1 - Intros. What's the most (or least!) rational thing you did in the last month?

2 - A short Fermi estimation intro and game, by me

3 - Discussion of the next chunk of the Rationality book. That will be the interlude ("The Simple Truth"), the intro to Book II ("Rationality: an Introduction"), and then Part E ("Overly Convenient Excuses"), which is chapters 46 to 56.

Also, please note that the venues for this meetup are closer to Haymarket station than they are to Waverley station.

This time we'll be talking about section D ("Mysterious Answers") of the rationality book, plus trying a slightly different format!

As usual, please pass this on to anyone who might be interested.

The location may change if someone suggests another place, but it will be within a few minutes walk of Waverley station.

This time we'll be discussing the next section of the Rationality book. It's section C, Noticing Confusion.

This time I will do something on Fermi estimation, since I have to deliver a talk on it before the meeting! However, I'm not sure if it will be as good as our discussion on the length of a piece of string last time!

As usual, please pass this on to anyone who might be interested.

We're going to meet in Edinburgh this time! I don't know the layout of the venue, but we'll be recognisable by books, stuffed owls, signs with Bayes' theorem on them, or some other LW trope.

We're starting a read-through of EY's "Rationality: From AI to Zombies." So this time we'll be discussing Book 1 - that's sections A to D.

Then we'll go on to whatever is on people's mind. Sometimes that's world domination, sometimes it isn't...

Hope to see some new faces then!

After a successful trial meetup (five people!) in November, this will be the first meetup of 2015.

We don't have a definite plan yet, but we had some suggested activities last time - rationality games or show-and-tell style talks on what techniques we like. I think bentarm may volunteer!

Help please! Making a good choice between two jobs

2 cjb230 10 July 2013 11:23AM

After about three months of unemployment, today I have been told I will receive two different job offers. Obviously I want to make a decision that maximises my utility, but there are some difficult-to-quantify factors involved. Can anyone suggest a useful or clarifying perspective on the choice? What questions should I be asking myself?

As background, I'm a 36-year old male techie based in the UK. What I would really like to do is build my own startup, or join a startup that I think has good prospects. However, having done that twice, and nearly bankrupted myself twice, I need to get a financial cushion under myself before trying again. For the sake of my CV, I think I need to stay in my next role for at least 18 months. After that, I hope to be able to try something entrepreneurial again, but I want to stay employable in technology as a financial safeguard.

One job is in London, and will certainly pay more. I have many friends there, and a social network I can get back in to straight away. The pool of women I am interested in dating is much bigger there. The job itself will allow me to improve my skills, but probably not broaden them; there are very skilled people there that I can learn from. With this job, I fear being bored, and getting more and more specialised in a skill that is getting less popular.

The other job is in Glasgow. It will pay less, probably by about £15k. The cost of living difference, after tax, will probably be bigger than this - I expect I will have more money in my pocket with this job than with the London job. I only know two people living in Glasgow, so I will need to make new friends and get a new social life. Dating prospects are probably less good, but I don't know by how much. The job itself looks more interesting, and I can broaden my skills. The job market I am in will probably be more open to me after I take this job. With this job, I fear getting depressed due to isolation, and also the long-term effect of accepting a pay cut - if I worked in London again later, would I be able to negotiate my salary back up?

Cost aside, London is a better location. It has more of everything I am interested in (including a LW meetup group!). Location and pay aside, the job in Glasgow is better. I expect it will be more interesting, and will make it less likely that I'll be unemployed in the future.

I don't know how to weight these factors up properly. What mistakes in judgement do I need to avoid? What approaches can I take to make the decision easier to make correctly?
