Meetup : Durham: Ugh Fields Followup
Discussion article for the meetup : Durham: Ugh Fields Followup
We will meet at Cocoa Cinnamon to follow up on our previous discussion about Ugh Fields.
Do you have any nagging questions you didn't ask at the last meetup? Thoughts or insights that occurred after you left? Have you made progress on any of your personal Ugh Fields, either in identifying them or combating them?
Join us to talk about it!
We'll meet around 7, and start topical discussion around 7:30; hopefully this will give everyone time to get coffee and such. We'll adjourn around 9, probably to Fullsteam.

We'll be discussing Ugh Fields: what they are, how they keep you from accomplishing stuff, and how to recognize and reduce them. As always, RSVPs are appreciated but not required. We encourage you to show up around 7, and we'll start on-topic content at 7:30. If you're feeling energetic about it, there's a relevant article. Afterwards, we will probably meander over to Fullsteam and be sociable.

Meetup : Durham: Stupid Rationality Questions
Discussion article for the meetup : Durham: Stupid Rationality Questions
Have questions about rationality-related topics that we haven't talked about? Or that we have, and you still have questions about? Things you've seen on the web site and been confused about, but avoided asking for clarification?
Bring your questions, even (especially, really) the ones that feel like dumb questions. (Are "dumb questions" actually a cue that you're noticing confusion? hmm...) We'll talk about them and collectively try to reduce our confusion.
Meeting will start at 7:30 and run until 9:30; feel free to show up any time after 7, and there will probably be continued less-structured chat / gaming / libations afterwards.

New location this time!
We'll have a followup to our previous meetup about persuasion techniques and defenses to them from Influence, with a somewhat more low-key social focus. For those that have been eagerly anticipating it, this is also the date and location for our friend Deniz' cider release party (Sourwood Brewing).

Meetup : Durham: New Years' Resolutions etc.
Discussion article for the meetup : Durham: New Years' Resolutions etc.
As your intrepid meetup organizers are still a bit worn out from their Solstice adventuring, this will be a somewhat low-key meetup. Our proposed discussion topic is New Years' resolutions, what makes for good ones, and whether or not you should make them.
We'll be at the Roxboro St house with the red door at 7 for general introductions, planning to start actual meetup discussions around 7:30. Meetup will run until 9:30 officially, but we're unlikely to kick people out / go to bed for a while after that.

Meetup : Durham: Luminosity followup

A month ago or so we finished going through Alicorn's Luminosity sequence on Less Wrong. So, having done that and worked on Being Luminous for a month or two (or more), what conclusions did you draw?
We'll meet for coffee and informal introductions at 7:00. On-topic conversation will run from 7:30-9:00.
Please give some thought to what you learned (or didn't learn) from the luminosity meetups, and what impact it has had in the time period since.
If you weren't around for all (or even any) of the Luminosity meetups, please feel free to come anyway! Bring some questions about it for people that were, if you like :)

Rationality witticisms suitable for t-shirts or bumper stickers
What are your best short witticisms, suitable for use on a t-shirt, bumper sticker, or similar location? Ideally something that might make someone reading it think, or get curious enough to ask about it. Simple in-group identification is fine too, though.
For context, therufs is spending today at the NC Maker Faire making t-shirts, and asked me for suggestions this morning. As I was still mostly asleep, I wasn't very helpful.
Meetup : Zendo and discussion

We will talk about assorted things of interest over Zendo!
If you have not played the game before, it is a fun game of inductive logic. It is good for critical thinking, demonstrating some common cognitive biases, and is generally good for prompting rationality related discussion.
It's also very friendly to newcomers.
Suggested things to think about before coming:
What is your favorite recent LW article, and why? What changes have you made in your life recently, and what role did rationality play in them? What would you like to see more of in future meetups, and why?
Meetup runs until 9, but there will probably be people having beers at Fullsteam after.

We'll discuss the start of the Luminosity sequence by Alicorn: how and why to know what's going on inside your own head.

The background material linked from these articles may be helpful as well; wikiwalk as you deem appropriate.
We'll meet at our usual 7:00 to say hello, get coffee, chat, and wait for latecomers. On-topic discussion will start at 7:30.

Meetup : Durham HPMoR Discussion, chapters 51-55
Discussion article for the meetup : Durham HPMoR Discussion, chapters 51-55
We'll get together to discuss Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, chapters 51-55. Also known as the first portion of the Stanford Prison Experiment section. As always, we'll be happy to summarize the chapters if you haven't read all of them, haven't read them recently enough, etc.
Come join us for food, beverages, rationality, philosophy, and general awesomeness. Food can be found at the food trucks by the farmer's market or outside Fullsteam; coffee can be found at Cocoa Cinnamon and possibly the farmer's market.
We'll start gathering around 12, and on-topic discussion will start at 12:30; that should give everyone enough time to settle in and eat their food and such (which, btw, you're welcome to bring to Fullsteam).
If you need directions, parking advice, transportation help, etc., please email the RTLW list.
